Since 1928, the community center has been an important place of gathering for the City of McPherson. In 2019, a renovation of this historic 23,000 sq. ft. building was completed, offering improved amenities and facility usage, as well as preserved aesthetics. Among the improvements are a renovated gymnasium and lobby, as well as a community multi-purpose room repurposed from the theater. Thermal enhancements to the building shell and high-efficiency MEP systems produced overall life-cycle cost savings. This project was the recipient of the 2020 Medallion Award for Excellence from the Kansas Preservation Alliance.
