After first passing their school bond proposal, the community of Brush, Colorado, was awarded a BEST (Building Excellent Schools Today) grant from the Colorado Department of Education, helping them secure funds needed for a new, state-of-the-art middle school and high school.

Integrated Consulting Engineers was brought in on their largest project to date, ensuring that the new HVAC system met the strict set of BEST grant criteria. Buildings under this program must meet CHPS (Collaborative for High Performance Schools) standards, which are “reduce operating costs, achieve higher student performance, increase daily attendance, improve water and resource efficiency, and minimize the environmental impact of school facilities.”

The new high school/middle school was built where the old high school stood, and the old middle school building downtown was sold. One challenge was how to incorporate a portion of the remaining building (two gyms, a portion of the weight room, and the locker rooms) as well as developing an HVAC system that was as efficient as possible.

Integrated Consulting Engineers recommended an ice storage system, which makes ice at full speed during the middle of the night when electrical rates are lower, and is used to cool the air during the hotter daytime hours. Though the construction manager initially expressed serious concern about this type of system, Integrated Consulting Engineers remained adamant about the advantages. Six months after it was installed, the utility company did an energy model showing that the system would be paid off in two years with the savings incurred.
